WIZARD   EPIC POWER METAL FROM GERMANY Band Questions answer by SVEN D´ANNA
Please introduce yourself and the band members briefly? Hi! My name is Sven D’Anna I am the singer oft he german metal band WIZARD. The other musicians of the band are: Michael Maass (guitar, 47),Dano Boland (guitar, 50),Arndt Ratering (bass, 43) and Sören van Heek (Snoppi, drums, 47).   What does the band name mean and how do you get it? The band name means magician, translated differently. Sören (drums) decided at that time for this name. There is no definite reason for that, I think.   Where and how was the band founded? We are from Bocholt, Germany. That's in the west of germany near the dutch border, near Düsseldorf or Cologne. Snoopi formed the band in 1989.   Have you played in other bands before? Yes before I started to sing I was the drummer of a local band called MANDRAGORE.   Was it hard to find suitable band members who fit musically and humanely with the band? No, we had a big metal scene in Bocholt. Among them were many musicians .... somehow we were all friends that fit very well from the beginning. WIZARD was not founded because of the music. Rather, out of friendship, we all wanted to do something.   What are the lyrics about and who of you is writing them ? Most oft he lyrics are fantasy stuff. Volker our ex bass player has written a lot. Today I write for the most part, from time to time even sets Sören down his thoughts.   Which bands inspired you and how would you describe your music to someone who has never heard a sound from you? This is very different, one loves thrash metal the other heavy metal. I think everyone in the band has different influences. WIZARD is made up of these different influences. We play hard, loud, true fucking heavy metal. If you are into metal with great choruses to sing along with, you are welcome in WIZARD land.   Why should people listen to our music? Oh I think you have to ask our fans about that. Next year we celebrate our 30th anniversary. Think time speaks for itself. During this time we produced a lot of great metal stuff. So if you are into real metal you have to listen to it. And for sure you will love it!   In 1995, your first album Son of Darkness was released. how long did you work on the album and how proud were you of holding it for the first time? Honestly, I have no idea how long we've been working on this album. As you can imagine, we were very proud of our first CD.   Son of Darkness and Battle of Metal were your first two albums what are your favorite songs on the albums and why? Both albums are something very special for me. They reflect a very nice time in my life. We were at the very beginning of our career. Thus, every single song is something special for me personally.   Bound by Metal your third album from 1999 is a highlight of your early phase. How do you feel about the album today? "Bound by Metal" is still a great album for me. Again, many memories are called when I listen to this album. Already the recordings in Mohrman Studio Bochum were something special.   Head of the Deceiver was your debut album for the label lmp in 2001. how did you come to the label and how was working with the label from today's perspective? LMP helped us a lot, for me it was always a really good cooperation. A big part of the WIZARD story. I can not say exactly how we got there. Long time ago .   Unfortunately, Dirk Illing died too early and was responsible for the ingenious cover artwork odin. How did you get in touch? Yes, in any case Dirk left us too soon. Again, I can not say 100% how the contact came to terms. I think we wrote to him personally. He did a great job!   2007 with the album Goochan since you changed to massacre records where you are still under contract today and one of the longest serving bands at the label counts how since you have satisfied with the cooperation after years you already had a special there? Also with Massacre we are very satisfied. Otherwise we would not continue to work with them. It's all very straightforward and we have the freedom to do our thing. That is and has always been very important to us.   Jens Reinhold an austrian artist draws eur cover for trail of death. How did you come to the austrians? Our drummer Snoopi has contacted Jens. A very nice guy ....   Achim Köhler is working on some of your album for you. How satisfied are you with his work? Yes, he mixed and mastered our last albums. We are very satisfied with Achim and will work with him in the future. He makes a great sound.   Your last album Fallen Kings is from the year 2017 how were the works done and how satisfied are you with the album? I love this album, an absolute blast. Heavy metal to the end .... The album has also arrived very well with the fans. The songwriting was very straightforward and was a lot of fun. We recorded everything in my studio. Here, too, Achim Köhler was responsible for mix and mastering.   You are celebrating your 30th anniversary with a good you tube documentation with some live performances. Do you already work on new songs and what are the plans for the next album? Yes, we are already working on new songs. Our plan is to continue as before and with a new CD in the luggage as many concerts as possible to play.   What were the high points and the low points in the 30 years checkout at wizard? and did you ever want to throw everything away and stop the music? There were many ups and downs. I think after the release of the Odin album we were at the then high point. We did a great tour with Grave Digger, played at the Wacken Open Air and traveled halfway around the world. A low point was probably the revelation of our guitarist Michael that he has to take a break for 3 years. In addition, we had in the production of the album Magic Circle very big problems. Well shit happens .... in the end we did not let us down and continued to fight for our dream.   Not only did you get positive reviews about your albums, how do you deal with it as a musician when you are criticized for something where you put your heart's blood into it? Personally, that does not really interest me. Different people have different tastes and that's a good thing. We can not make every person happy.   Since 2016 you have been active with the Argentinean band Feanor. How do you get in touch with the band and how do they work together between germany and argentienin I have been in contact with bassist Gustavo for about 20 years. Several years ago I already sang a song for a Feanor album. In 2015 he came to me and asked if I would like to record an entire album because the band had no singer at the time. I really liked the songs so I agreed. Yes, somehow I slipped into it. Twice I was in Argentina to perform live, really cool. Since 2018 we have David Shankle (ex Manowar) as a permanent member on the guitar. At the end of 2018 we had a South America tour together. that was really cool. In 2019 we will release a new album, the recordings are already in the box. So be alert, more heavy metal will come!   What was your first concert as a fan? And what memory do you have of it? Puhhh I do not really remember ... Perhaps the first concert was VEBRIFUGE in my hometown. That was a great thrash metal band from Bocholt.   What were your live highlights and with which bands did you play? Oh, a lot has come together in 30 years. Wacken was a big highlight, we toured twice with Grave Digger. Otherwise, we played with Doro, Rage, Manowar, Edguy, just to name a few. We've seen a lot of the world, like concerts in America, Belarus, Greece, Spain, France ... and somehow every concert is a highlight in itself.   Have already resulted in friendship ? Oh yes, we've made some friends around the world. That's what made metal.   Which band would you like to play live with and why? Honestly, I fulfilled most of my wishes. Today I am happy about every good festival.   With what do you earn your money except with the music? I'm a houseman, take care of the kids. So I have enough time to live my dream. From time to time I help out in my brother's restaurant. Is a good change.   How important are social media for you as a band? This is becoming more and more important for the band.   What would you (her) want to achieve with the band? I have already achieved much more than expected. It's just awesome, you travel around the world, trump great people and live your dream. As it is currently I am very satisfied.   What do you think about the Germany Metal scene in general? Unfortunately, the scene in our city is completely gone. But I think the Metal Scene is very well positioned in Germany. You can see it at the whole festival. Heavy metal is becoming more popular ....   Maybe you can recommend some bands from your area? WIZARD, WIZARD, WIZARD   PERSONAL QUESTIONS !   Where did you grow up and how was your childhood? I was born and raised in Bocholt. My childhood was very nice, I can not complain. My father is Italian and my mother German ... We were up to 3 months on summer vacation in Italy .... that was always cool.   How was your school time you were rather the good student or the break clown ? Mhhh, the elementary school was good. Then it started with the music ... I did not have much time for the school ha ha ha. But in the end I did my Apitur. But I was never the clown, my classmates also respected me that way.   How did your parents react when you started making metal music? did they support you and how do you feel about your music today? In any case, my parents have respected and supported my music. My grandfather was a professional musician, of course, my parents were proud that I also make music. They were also often at WIZARD concerts.   Would you be successful in making music as a musician? How do you mean? Of course it is nice if you succeed. Think we have done a lot with WIZARD already.   Are you someone who loves the hustle and bustle of the big city? or rather looking for peace and relaxation in nature? I like both….. The musical and cultural offer in a big city is already cool. I lived in Cologne for 2 years. It was a great time. Likewise I like the peace and nature.   Do you actively practice sports or are you more of a passive spectator? I am not a sportsman but I try to keep me fit. A 1.5 hour show is no sugar licking.   When it comes to your physical well you can cook or let you cook for you Oh I love cooking and yes in our household I am the cook.   What does your environment tell you about your passion for metal (friends / family / colleagues) ? They all think that's very cool. Especially because I see a lot of the world. Sometimes they can hardley believe what’s going on with WIZARD.   How do you see the problem with the haters on the internet who have to announce their mental garbage in anonymity always and everywhere? I don’t care about them. Sick people…..   What do you think about the internet in general? a blessing or a curse? As a musician, I think the internet is rather negative. The CD sales are going down drastically. Of course that's not great. However, the network also has many advantages. Fast advertising, fast communication worldwide. Everything has pros and cons.   What would you personally like to do in your life? Travel even more and explore the places of the world I have not been to yet.   Which question would you like to have answered and why? Why is Jack Daniels so expensive? I love this drink ;-)   Germany Metal   Austria great country   Argentinia great country   Jack daniels I love it…..   Soccer I don’t like….   Buckwheat pancakes I don’t like pancakes   Movie or Series Supernatural   Family 3 Children     Your top 10 all time album faves Manowar – Kings of Metal WASP – Live….In the raw Slayer – South of heavan Virgin Steele – Invictus Manowar – Battle Hymns Exploited – Punks Not Dead Mötley Crue – Girls Girls Girls Skid Row – Slave tot he grind Guns n Roses – Appetite for Destruction Judas Priest -   Painkiller   your top 5 albums in time!
