VINTERGATA   SYMPHONIC BLACK METAL FROM RUSSIA Band Questions answer by ALEXANDR “NORTTI” DEMIDOV
Please introduce yourself and the band members briefly? Hi, my name is Alexander and I am the director and vocalist of  Vintergata  . We started this project with my friend Alexey, who plays bass with us, previously we played together in other bands. One of my long-time comrades in the band is Vasiliy Gorshkov, an excellent drummer, who participates in many cool Russian musical projects. Next I want to introduce Vladimir Lehtinen. We met Volodya almost at the very beginning of the birth of VintergatA, he took an indisputable place as a guitarist, and in recent years has been performing the functions of sound and music producer. In 2016, Velli-Mati from Kalmah joined the project, he is just a stunning keyboard player. That's all, this is the main part. All the others are guest musicians for one purpose or another, who are either my friends or musicians with whom I wanted to work in this or that period. What does the band name mean and how do you get it? Mmm, Vintergata is an Old Norse word, means the Milky Way, literally "the road in milk". In our country, fans mostly do not understand the meaning, and if they translate in Google they get the translation “winter street” in Norwegian, the “galaxy” in Swedish. I chose the name for the project from several words, interesting, difficult and beautiful. My acquaintance, Yulia Gornoskul, a linguist, a specialist in German-Scandinavian languages, a young writer, helped me in this. Recently she's released an amazing book "Carpathian Dreambook." He is also the author of the lyrics of three of our songs, the latest of which is the newest single "Wolf's Dream", which is available for free on the bandcamp. Where and how was the band founded? After the trials in the near-similar styles, came an understanding of how I want to hear my music . Have you played in other bands before? Yes, I was participated in two bands before Vintergata, its: Morbid Violence (sympho black) and Funeral Moon (folk metal). Both bands released the albums. I also participated in several projects as a session vocalist. And I am always open to new offers. Was it hard to find suitable band members who fit musically and humanely with the band? No, in view of the previous experience, it was quite simple, and the necessary musicians came across spontaneously, so to speak, fate so ordered. What are the lyrics about and who of you is writing them? Um, this is basically fantasy, the first album is more fictional, the second one is more supported by Russian fairy tales and mythology. I used to write some texts outside Vintergata, then I decided that it was necessary to pass this on to more experienced people and prepare only those tasks. On the first album the lyrics were written by Victor Storm, at that time he was writing songs for a band of my friend. On the new album, called Smorodina, I invited Demether Grail, an amazing and a very creative person. Demether's not only lyric-writer, but also the famous metal vocalist in just a huge number of bands in our country. Also in our discography there are a few songs on poems by Yulia Gornoskul, I mentioned it earlier in the question of the name of the band. Which bands inspired you and how would you describe your music to someone who has never heard a sound from you? Basically it is the 2000s echelon and albums of the respective years. Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, Ancient, Tristania, Trail of Tears, After Forever, Astarte. I think enough. I think I would tell the listener that it is metal. Why should people listen to our music? Should? No, people don’t owe me) but I’m glad when the number of listeners grows from year to year. In 2013 you released your debut album "Lands of Plague" in Russian language. How satisfied are you with it today and what is your favorite song on it? Yes, I am very pleased with this album. That is why in the autumn of 2018, along with the new album, we published on the label a new version in English, where I resung my vocals and removed all the clean female vocals. How long did it take to work on the album? I do not remember, probably about 1.5 years. Viktor "Storm" a poet has written lyrics for the album how do you get in contact with him and how do you work together? Is he also a fan of your music? It's simple, he wrote texts to my friend in his band, I suggested that he write texts for me, he agreed, I issued a technical task and that's it. No, Viktor loves more melodic music, something like power metal paver. Another artist is your art work and cover drafts Alexander Tartsus. How did you get in contact with him and how do you like his work for you and many other artists? I don’t remember exactly what kind of work I saw, but I thought that he would definitely draw very cool. He has his own style, when new releases come out you can always determine what the design was done by Sasha. For Vintergata he painted 4 covers. To the new single Vladimir Prokofiev drew the art, on the basis of this art we released official T-shirts. Vladimir also drew us a videoclip for the title track from the new album. In 2016, did you release "Lands of Plague" in English? Why did you want to make it interesting for the international market and not just publish something in the Russian area? In 2013 one Polish label offered me to publish "Моровы Земли" in English. We recorded the vocals, and then this edition dragged on for years and in 2016 I just posted a digital copy on the Internet. Now, in 2018, finally, the English version is released on a CD on our domestic label. On the new recording some guest female singers can be heard: among others Maria Tristessa who died in 2014. When did she sing the song Entropy for you? Yes that's right. In 2013 we recorded vocals. This question is often asked, but if the label did not powder our brains, then the English version would be released in 2013. In 2018 Смородина why did you make another album in the country language and not again in english? Now the foreign listener does not hesitate to listen to new music in Russian, or not in the main European languages, and it pleases. How long did the work take and what were the differences from the debut album in the collaboration? Well, it turns out 5 years. A lot of teamwork has been done on the new album, a lot of ideas have been implemented from all the participants and this is great! Are you planning to release the album again in English in the near future? I have thoughts to record a few songs in English with foreign vocalists from famous bands, but I don’t know if anyone wants to. You are at Fono Ltd. under contract. what do you expect from working together and how satisfied are you? No, we had a contract with Fono for three years. I will tell you a little secret, there was no mutual work. Labels do not work with musicians here, except to shake off money from them. Now I have released 2 albums on SoundAge Prod., where we have absolutely friendly, non-binding relations, for which I thank you so much! Are you planning a tour through europe in the future or will you focus on other areas? We are not a concert band, everyone has their basic formations and works, and absolutely no time for that. Although who knows) What was your first concert as a fan? And what memory do you have of it? I think that was Nightwish, then they came to present "Wishmaster". It was cool! By the way, with Tarja I would work, it would be enchanting to record Vintergata with her. I love her vocal very much. What were your live highlights and with which bands did you play? A concert of my first band Morbid Violenct with Theatres des Vampires. Have already resulted in friendship? It was a long time ago) Which band would you like to play live with and why? I'd rather listen to these guys from the the pit) With what do you earn your money except with the music? I go to daywork. How important are social media for you as a band? This is a good tool for promoting the creativity. What would you (her) want to achieve with the band? At least some more good albums. What do you think about the Russia Metal scene in general? Our scene is actively developing, there are many good bands in different styles, some new ones are constantly appearing, ready to be on par with the foreign scene. Maybe you can recommend some bands from your area? It is difficult, now the truth is that we have a lot of good bands here, I forget to voice someone - they will be offended. PERSONAL QUESTIONS ! Where did you grow up and how was your childhood? Just like ordinary children. How was your school time you were rather the good student or the break clown? I studied mediocrely. How did your parents react when you started making metal music? did they support you and how do you feel about your music today? The normal reaction, as on the usual hobby. I think yes, support was and is, they are always interested in what and how new and so on. Would you be successful in making music as a musician? I think more - yes, than not. Are you someone who loves the hustle and bustle of the big city? or rather looking for peace and relaxation in nature? The fact is that in the modern world, of course, it is more comfortable in the metropolis, but I really like going out to the country, or out of town with friends, and making a mushroom trip, for example. Now I’m planning a trip to Montenegro, I love this country, I’m walking there in the mountains. Do you actively practice sports or are you more of a passive spectator? I go to gym and I'm just not against any active games. When it comes to your physical well you can cook or let you cook for you? Oh, I love cooking for family and friends and I do it very cool. Constantly looking for new recipes, mostly meat dishes. What does your environment tell you about your passion for metal (friends / family / colleagues)? They are always interested in my musical activities, even if they do not understand this music. How do you see the problem with the haters on the internet who have to announce their mental garbage in anonymity always and everywhere? I screw them all. What do you think about the internet in general? a blessing or a curse? I look from the side of modern society, yes, this is definitely a plus. If we look at the fact that someone complains that they cannot sell their music in the digital age, they simply do not try. Just before when there was only a CD, it was easier. What would you personally like to do in your life? I would like to move to Montenegro, buy a house there, do private excursions, and take care of the child the rest of the time.
