SUNRISE   POWER METAL FROM UKRAINE Band Questions answer by NAUMENKO
Please introduce yourself and the band members briefly? I’m Konstantin Naumenko, and I’m singer in the power metal band called Sunrise. On the keyboards and backing vocals we have Daria Naumenko, Vlad Sedov on the bass guitar, Evgeniy Vasiliev on the guitar and Alexander Ignatenko on the drums.   What does the band name mean and how do you get it? The band name symbolizes the cyclicality, when the light comes after the dark night. We want our music to give people faith in goodness.   Where and how was the band founded? The band was founded in Kyiv, Ukraine, in 2003, when both of us – me and Vitaliy Petrichenko (former guitarist of Sunrise) were students and there was a big desire to play music and gather the band. Then we started to look for other musicians and after a while the first line-up was formed.   Have you played in other bands before? We haven’t played in other bands before, just because we didn’t know how to play. We started from zero point with Sunrise. We learned to play our instruments and learned to write our first songs.   Was it hard to find suitable band members who fit musically and humanely with the band? At first it seemed not hard, and we quickly found suitable musicians. But the band developed, and our skill grew up, and not everyone from our band could grow in the rhythm of the band. So over time, our line-up has completely changed.   What does the band name mean? Sunrise – the most optimistic phenomenon of nature.   What are the lyrics about and who of you is writing them? The subject of the texts touches upon questions of self-realization and self- knowledge of the personality, the search for the meaning of life and spiritual development, as well as lyrical reflections on love and relationships between people. I write mostly all the lyrics. But sometimes other band members help me.   Which bands inspired you and how would you describe your music to someone who has never heard a sound from you? The greatest influence comes from bands like Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica and Helloween, so if we want to quickly describe our music, we use these names for a better understanding.   Why should people listen to your music? Sometimes, when you want to find more good and quality music in the style of power metal, you can see that not many bands can satisfy your request. So your search ends with a small number of top bands, while most of other bands are making some kind of musical chewing gum. We’re aspiring to make quality music with good taste. Music that touches the human soul.   Liberty is your debut from the year 2007. How long have you been working on the album? I think we have worked on this album for about 3 years.   What are your memories of creating the album and what do you think about the album today? It was our first experience in recording our songs. Many things were not perfect, and sometimes there was a lack of skill to make record at a high professional level. Also we were students and had almost no budget. But it was a good start, and it was useful experience for the further works.   What's your favorite song on the album and why? I think it is „Born To Find“. It was probably the first song I ever wrote. This song expresses all my musical passion in those days.   The album was released on the label Metalism Records, how did you cooperate, and why are you no longer working with them? It was a good opportunity for our debut album, and it was a release with a good label who did his work professionally. Thanks to this label, our album was heard in power metal community, and we received good feedback. But then the music market began to change dramatically. And the way of selling music has changed too. So we were forced to look for the other ways to promote and sell our records.   In 2009, your second album Trust Your Soul was released, how long did the work take? We spent about two years working on this album.   Max Morton was on the album for you as mixer and recorder. Please tell about this collaboration. We wanted to make our record as qualitative as possible and at a high professional level. And at that time, Max Morton was, perhaps, the only good sound engineer in Ukraine who understood how power metal records should sound. He also offered affordable prices.   Absolute Clarity was released in 2016 after 2 singles and EP. It took seven years to release the third album. Why did it take a little longer with this album? First of all, we built our own studio to record the album, and I also needed a lot of time to get some skill in sound engineering and producing. We also had some changes in the line-up, and the new musicians tried to bring their own vision to the new songs, so we revised the songs again and again. Actually we have already written songs for two albums. Some of them were included in the Absolute Clarity album, and others you will hear on the next album.   Brazilian artist Jean Michel is responsible for the successful cover artwork. How did you contact him, and how do you like work together? I was looking for a good artist to make artworks for our albums, and it was not easy for me to find the one who would understand my ideas and make the artwork the way I see it. Suddenly I found the contact of Jean Michel, and I liked his work for other projects. We started our collaboration, and I realized that this guy is doing everything just perfect!   In 2017 you released DVD Through The Eyes Of Infinity? How was it sold and how happy are you with it? We are really happy with this release, because it’s a very serious step for our band. It needs a good skill from musicians to perform at the necessary level for a good DVD concert. It was very difficult to make a DVD with our low budget, but we have a great team – the people who love what they do and they love Sunrise. Their help and devotion made a fantastic result! We are also happy with the sale of this release and we are very grateful to our fans for their great support!   You release the single Дар in 2018 on Moon Records. Is that your label? Moon Records is a legendary Ukrainian label who helps us to appear on the digital platforms of the world, and now all people can stream our songs wherever they are.   Are there any new songs and what are the plans for a new album and in which direction are the new songs going? Yes, we have many songs for the next album, so soon we will go to the studio to make another great chapter in the history of the band. Some songs will be in the classical Sunrise’s key – melodic metal with catchy choruses, and with other songs we will try some experiments to bring something new to our listeners.   What was your first concert as a fan? And what memory do you have from it? My first concert as a fan was in 2005, and it was a concert of Stratovarius in Moscow. It was an incredible experience and emotions to see them live!   What were your live highlights and with which bands did you play? We were lucky to play on big Ukrainian festivals on the same stage with Helloween, Hammerfall, Rage, Bonfire, Moonspell, Sabaton, Sirenia, Haggard, Dark Tranquillity. They are all good musicians and awesome people, so we are happy to have an amazing experience working so close to them!   Have already resulted in friendship? Yes, but musicians are very busy people, so we don’t really bother them with our messages. We are always happy to meet each other on the backstage.   Which band would you like to play live with and why? I’d like to play with Stratovarius or Sonata Arctica. Just because they are my musical messiah.   With what do you earn your money except with the music? Because of decay in the global music market, each of us must earn money in other spheres that may differ from the music business. Me and Daria have our music studio where I make records for other bands and projects, and Daria teaches her students to play the piano, singing and music theory.   How important are social media for you as a band? Now it’s really important to communicate with our fans directly and to reveal them our new works. Also it has good mechanisms for promoting our gigs.   What would you want to achieve with the band? For now, we want achieve financial independence and the ability to make regular world tours and regular releases of our albums.   What do you think about the Ukrainian Metal scene in general? Ukrainian metal scene is constantly growing, and the quality of the bands is also growing. We have many problems with musical infrastructure here, but metal scene is still alive.   Maybe you can recommend some bands from your area? I can recommend some power metal bands like Mirratal and Scarleth. These guys work hard and make interesting results. Also we have a number of names in extreme metal scenes, but I’m not very competent to speak about them, because I live mostly in the world of melodic metal0.   PERSONAL QUESTIONS !   Where did you grow up and how was your childhood? I spent my early years here in Kyiv, Ukraine, and some part of my childhood was in a deep Russian village. So all I remember is the boundless nature all around.   How was your school time you were rather the good student or the rule- breaker? I was a very quiet boy who doesn’t like school and spent most of the free time listening to music tapes.   How did your parents react when you started making metal music? Did they support you and how do they feel about your music today? At the beginning there was some resistance from them, because nobody in my family was a musician. It was the other planet for them, so they didn’t understand my enthusiasm. But after a while they saw my success and started to support me.   Would you be successful in making music as a musician? I think yes, but the problem now is in the budgets for the good promotion of my work.   Are you someone who loves the hustle and bustle of a big city? Or rather looking for peace and relaxation in nature? I love both – the city and the nature. I like to change the intense city life to calm of the nature far away from the metropolis.   Do you actively practice sports or are you more of a passive spectator? I love active sports and regularly visit the gym with my wife.   When it comes to your physical well you can cook or let y0ou cook for you? I can cook well, but I also like when somebody cooks for me.   What do people around you tell about your passion for metal (friends / family / colleagues) ? Everybody supports me. They like what I do, and they like to visit my shows.   How do you see the problem with the haters on the internet who have to announce their mental garbage in anonymity always and everywhere? I think we should not to pay attention to them. These silly people just want attention to look like arbiters.   What do you think about the internet in general? A blessing or a curse? It’s hard to give a certain answer to this question, because the Internet has become very important in our lives, but at the same time our life has become more virtual. But, it seems, it’s just an integral part of technology development.   Which question would you like to have answered and why? Why are we here? What would you personally like to do in your life? I like to travel with my family.   Ukraine Struggle for freedom   Austria Falco   Monument to the Magdeburg law Looks like the rocket   Bohdan Khmelnitsky monument Huge   Babka Hut   Vodka Never taste it   Movie or Series Movie   CD or Vinyl CD   Soccer Sometimes   Bukowel Skiing   Family The biggest wealth   Your top 10 all time album faves Stratovarius – Infinite Sonata Arctica – Ecliptica Hammerfall – Legacy of Kings Queen – Made in Heaven Edguy – Theater of Salvation Sentenced – The Funeral Album System Of A Down – Toxicity Blind Guardian – Imaginations Form The Otherside ERA – ERA II Michael Jackson - Dangerous   your top 5 albums in time   !
