KÜENRING BROTHERS IN METAL FROM AUSTRIA   Band Question answer by Florian Gutenthaler
Please introduce your self and the band members briefly? The band members of KÜENRING are my brother Stefan Gutenthaler (Bass &Vocals), Michael Sulzbachner (Guitars, age 23), Sebastian Sauer (Drums, age 19) and myself, Florian Gutenthaler (Guitars, age 27). What does the band name me an and how do you get it? We were inspired by de „Kuenringers“, who were, among other things, robber knights in our area (Waldviertel) in medieval times. We wanted a unique name and a name with some connection to our home, so we just took „Kuenring“ and put the famous „Heavy Metal Ümlaut“ above the „u“. Where and how was the band founded? The band founded in our home in Großschönau, Lower Austria in December 2010 by the remaining members of forerunner band „Madhouse“ (Stefan, Michael and me) and a new drummer. Have you played in other bands before? Stefan, Michael and me have already been playing together in the forerunner bands of KÜENRING (since 2005). Was it hard to find suitable band members who fit musically and humanely with the band? As mentioned above, Stefan, Michael and me have always been playing together since we started the band, but it was hard to find a fitting drummer. After many years we finally found the perfect drummer for our band with Sebastian Sauer in May 2015. What does the band name mean? As mentioned before, it is borrowed from the Kuenringers. What are the lyrics about and who of you is writing them? Our lyrics are about many different things – there is the funny side of us („Streetfight“, „Rise of the Madman“), historical stuff („Odyssey“, „Hounds of Kuenring“) and self-finding themes like „Into the Night“ and „The Unkwown“. By now, all of our lyrics have been written by Stefan and me except „Rise of the Madman“, which was written by our former singer in our forerunner band. Which bands inspired you and how would you describe your music to some one who has never heard a sound from you? We let inspire ourselves by many different bands, musicians and musical styles – but I think the influences which can be heard clearly in our music are classic 80s heavy metal bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Scorpions etc. Your debut album Küenring was released in 2017. How long did it take to create the album and who helped you? Overall it took about one and a half years to do the record and there were a few people, who helped us a lot on our way tothe release. Most of them were friends, like Felix Kirsch (audio engineer ad co-producer), Lukas Handl (cover artwork) and my girlfriend Elena (band photos for the album). Are there any new songs and in which directionare they going? We already did write and rehearse some songs for the next album, but we still got a lot of work left to do regarding this. I can’t really tell something about the direction of the new songs, but I think the album will sound rather different than the first one. You have been under contract with the German label SAOL. How did you get in contact with them and how is working to gether? They have already contacted us at the time of the release of our EP „The Nameless Fallen“ in late 2013, but we wanted to wait for a label-release until we got better as a band and have the money to record the songs in a proper quality (a recording studio). And so we contacted them again, when the new album was finished and the collaboration is satisfying so far. What were your live high lights and with which bands did you play? I think our live highlight was our gig at our album release party at „Kapu“ (Linz) in march this year – full house and we and the crowd were goin‘ crazy! :D Apart from that, we already had the pleasure to play with bands like Manilla Road, Cauldron and Air Raid. Have already resulted in friendship ? We got along very well with the guys from Cauldron. What do you think and what do you think about the Austrian scene in general? As for our style of music (80s inspired Heavy Metal), I think the austrian scene is very very small. There are just a handful of bands and fans, who dedicate themselves to this style, which is very sad I think. Why do you think in the Austrian media the hard rockor heavy metal, regardless of whether national or international almost not considered(I remember a rock and metals how that ran centuries ago in orf on Saturdaynight) ? For real? I’d really love to see that show ^^ We’ll Hard Rock and Heavy Metal have always been „niche music“ and (most of the bands) just can’t reach mainstream sucess. But I don’t think this is much different in other countries. Why do you think Austrian actsare not supportedby national recordlabels? z.B.napalmrecords ! I don’t know if that’s a fact, so I can’t tell. With what do you earn your money except with themusic? I work in an antiquarian bookshop in Vienna. How important are socialmedias for you as a band? Very important, I think it’s the best opportunity to get in touch with your fans as a band nowadays. What would you (her) want to achieve with the band? We’d really like to make the band our profession one day and we work very hard to achieve this goal. Maybe you can recommend some bands from your area? Regarding this, I’d like to recommend „Wildhunt“, „Eisenhand“ and „High Heeler“ – all of them very good 80s inspired metal bands from Austria and each of them with a unique sound. PERSONAL QUESTIONS ! Where did you grow up and how was your childhood? I did grow up in Großschönau (Lower Austria) and my childhodd has been very happy and fun. How was your school time you wererather the good student or the break clown ? I was a good student in primary and secondary modern school, but then came the fall from grace in polytechnic haha :D – I wasn’t really interested and had no talent in the stuff taught there. Nonetheless I graduated somehow ^^ How did your parentsreact when you started making metal music? Did they support you and how do you feel about your music today? I think it was none of a surprise for my parents (my father already listened to Hard Rock and Heavy Metal in the 70s/80s) and to this day, they have always supported my brother and me in what we were doing. Would you be successful in making musicas a musician? I hope so :D Are you someone who loves the hustle and bustle of the big city? Or rather looking for peace and relaxation in nature? I love the big city and I’ve been living in Vienna for a few years now. But from time to time I just gotta leave and spend some time at home in Waldviertel. I this „variety“ is the right way for me  Do you actively practice sports or are you more of a passive spectator? Spectator, clearly :D When it comes to your physical well you can cook or let you cook for you? I’m not a good cook, but I do cook simple meals rather often for myself What does your environ ment tell you about your passion for metal (friends / family / colleagues)? Some of them just don’t understand, but most of them are keen and support me in what I am doing with the band  How do you see the problem with the haters on the internet who have to announce their mental garbage in anonymity always and everywhere? Well, I’m not excited about that, but you can’t do anything against it anyway. What do you think about the internet in general? A blessingor a curse? Both at the same time – as you mentioned above, there’s a lot of shit going on on the net, but on the other hand it’s a great opportunity to reach many many people. What would you personally like to do in your life? As said before, I’d really love to make the band my profession. Austria I am very happy to live here. Waldviertel Same answer, beautiful place to live Iron Maiden or Judas Priest Maiden is great, but Priest is my absolute number one. Metallicaor Scorpions I can’t choose. Heathen or Megadeth Heathen, I’m not very much into Megadeth. Soccer or Ski I’m not good at both :D Also can’t choose Family I don’t know what you want to know here, but I love my girlfriend and my family  Movie or Series. As long as I like them, I like to watch both  Beer or Cola Beer all the way, plus it’s healthier Red Bull I have no idea how someone can actually like the taste of it… yourtop 5 in time ! I can’t really choose my top five bands/musicians of all time,   but here are 5 of my absolute favorites: Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Scorpions, Iron Maiden and Metallica The closing word is yours? Thanks a lot for doing the interview, it was fun!
