EVIL EYE   HEAVY METAL FROM COSTA RICA Band Questions answer by JEREMY JF
Please introduce yourself and the band members briefly? My name is Jeremy JF, the band members are: Christopher Soto – Guitar Christian Chaves – Guitar Isaac Cordero – Drums Irvin Cardoso – Bass Jeremy J.F. - vocals   What does the band name mean and how do you get it? Back in 2013 when we were trying to figure out how to start the band, we put 4 names into the table, Evil Eye was the coolest and also the sign of evil eye (horns) was made popular in heavy metal by Ronnie James Dio one of our biggest influences.   Where and how was the band founded? The band was founded by me and Christophe Soto back in 2013, the idea was to make something different, this country where we live (Costa Rica) has nothing but a bunch of death, black and trash metal bands.   Have you played in other bands before? Yeah, I’m 33 years old, I started doing this when I was 14 years old with one of my best friends on my highschool years, we started playing songs from ACDC and Judas Priest, then I had other bands, but I left them cause they wanted to play genres I hate and I don’t like.   Was it hard to find suitable band members who fit musically and humanely with the band? Yeah, one of the biggest problems here are the influences of the tipical metal kid from CR. When you say the word “ metal“ here in CR people tend to think of Slayer, Canibal Corpse, Dimmu Burgir and all these screaming metal bands , I was born in CR, but I have family in Los Angeles California, thats where most of my favorite bands are comming from, a completely different escene and knowledge of   what metal is for sure...   If you mention a band like Grim Reaper, Saxon or WASP, nobody knows what you are talking about... Black Sabbath played an empty stadium on their last tour just to mention how ignorant and unknowledgeble about the roots of metal the typical metal kids from this country are.   Dio also played here on an empty place, I worked on the backstage of that concert he was coming from Chile where he played in front of 15thounsand people, , here in CR 2 weeks later , w were barely 300 people. Sadest thing is Kreator played 2 weeks after and the place was full, that’s what you get here if you say the word Metal.. Death, Black, Gore, Trash , power, progresive, but classic old school and true hardrock heavy metal. They know Iron Maiden because Eddie looks evil and they know Judas Priest for Painkiller, thats it... Ohh Metallica yeah they love Metallica too.   What does the band name mean? Evil Eye ... when you do whichcraft to someone they say its the Evil Eye... also the sign of Evil Eye was made popular by Ronnie James Dio during the 80s.   What are the lyrics about and who of you is writing them ? We write about injustice , the corruption on the religion’s world, if I can put a couple of bands here to explain the way we write our songs I can put   Megadeth and Accept into the table for sure.   Which bands inspired you and how would you describe your music to someone who has never heard a sound from you? Accept , Judas Priest and Dio changed my life forever. Queen and Acdc were the bands that got me into music, but Accept, Judas Priest and DIO made me want to be a musician. We are a hardrock heavy metal band with an old school style and we like to play it loud, straight to your face, no fake stuff, no masks , no kids trying to pretend they are playing something they don’t feel.. I’ve seen bands where the guys are influenced by completely different genres and they don’t feel at all what they are playing, but they do it, just because they want to look so cool and they want to pretend they are badass. We are not that type of clowns , we are not pouser kids, if you come to our shows you will see it and you will feel it as well.   Why should people listen to our music? Because we are real, because we are busting our asses doing what we do and most important thing, because we are musicians and we love what we do.   Your debut album The Beginning of the End was released in 2017. How long did the production take and who helped you? The band had different lineups, we had a swedish guy on the guitar between 2013 and 2014 , then we had 2 different drummers as well, we also had a different bass player, to make this short the idea of the album was always mine, I have friends in Los Angeles and everytime I was flying to visit my family they were always asking me... When are you recording an album? When are you recording an album? When are you recording an album? Finally I was able to do it and not only that, Beau Hill (Ratt, Alice Cooper, Europe, Badbrains, Warrant, Winger, Kix) did the mix   and master of the last song of the album Bad Sinner. We put into that record what we created in the first 3 years of the band.   What's your favorite piece on the album and why? I like Warrior of Fate and Business of Faith, these are my 2 favorite songs of the album. Warrior of Fate talks about rissing from the asshess like a Fenix, basicly re inventing yourself. Business of Faith talks about religion and the corruption inside that world , we have millions of sheep people here, they do everything they are told by the Church, such a nasty thing.   Are you already working on new songs and when will we get to hear them? We are currently working with our 2 new members, Christian Chaves and Irvin Cardoso, I hope by the end of 2019 we can have at least half of the album ready.   What was your first concert as a fan? And what memory do you have of it? My first Concert as a fan was Stryper in 2001, I remember it was their very first concert in maybe 10 or 15 years.   What were your live highlights and with which bands did you play? So far I am still waiting for the highlights, we played a couple of big crowds when we were starting, I wish we were as good as we are right now by the time we played those gigs, but we had some nice moments with the people attending to those gigs. I cannot remember the names of the bands, right now, but let’s see I can name 2 decent bands we played with in the last 2 years,   Heavy Chains and Still Dogs.   Have already resulted in friendship ? Yeah I am Ok with some of the members of those bands.   Which band would you like to play live with and why? Accept, I hope one day we can open for them, cause they are one of my favorite bands. I’ve seen them twice   Is it hard to play live in Costa Rica? Oh yeah.   Would you like to play live in North America or Europe? That’s one of the main hopes for us this year, we are currently working on that. I’ve seen Guns N Roses, L.A. GUNS, Faster Pussycat, GreatWhite and other bands in the US and the vibe its completely different, even on the small clubs.   With what do you earn your money except with the music? Paying my bills dude.   How important are social media for you as a band? Well so far its becoming extremely important, this is the website of our band   What would you (her) want to achieve with the band? I want people to know we play loud and we play straigh to your fucking face, we play heavy metal and we love doing it.   What do you think about the Costa Rica metal scene in general? I prefer not to use any words my previous answers were good enough, all I can say is you get what you get and you have to work with that. To our fans , well we try to do our best, for sure we are not going to sell our selfs and we are going to end being a cover band like most of the bands here and for sure we are not going to change the style of the band to get more people, hell no... I would ratter cut my balls with a knife and add lemon on them.   Maybe you can recommend some bands from your area? Not really, maybe Heavy Chains and Slavon yeah they are good   PERSONAL QUESTIONS !   Where did you grow up and how was your childhood? I grow up on the jungle   and my childhood was fill with a lot of music from Deep Purple, Queen, Led Zepellin, Van Halen, Acdc and Kiss.   How was your school time you were rather the good student or the break clown ? I was a pain in the ass for sure, I ended droping high school when I was 15, I was already smoking poth and banging girls by that time. Things changed when I had to pay my bills and rent an apartment.   How did your parents react when you started making metal music? did they support you and how do you feel about your music today? Well they really don’t care I don’t really know if they know I am a musician hahahaha, maybe my mom does cause she bought   me my first guitar when I was 11 years old and gave me my first cd (Queen -Greatest Hits).   Would you be successful in making music as a musician? Sure, listen to our music and be the judge   Are you someone who loves the hustle and bustle of the big city? or rather looking for peace and relaxation in nature? I live in a mountain right now, I’ve been in New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and believe me I do prefer the forest, I do meditation right now and I have plants and cats. Back in the day maybe 8 years a go I was snoring cocaine with some metal heads and banging girls like if it was the end of the world. You grow up and then you need to pay your bills and then you realize you are in your 30s and that’s the way it is. I am ok with that I lived what I had to live and have no regrets at all. I am happy camper right now   Do you actively practice sports or are you more of a passive spectator? Sometimes i go to the gym yeah   When it comes to your physical well you can cook or let you cook for you Yeah I like cooking, I love italian food.   What does your environment tell you about your passion for metal (friends / family / colleagues) ? I am a meditation guy, I live at the very top of a hill and I have nothing but thress and Coyotes where I live.. all of the Sudden you hear Heavens on Fire from KISS or Mean man from WASP extremely loud comming from the speakers of my 800watts onkyo reciever.   How do you see the problem with the haters on the internet who have to announce their mental garbage in anonymity always and everywhere?   I’m not really a facebook kid, I always go to read blabermouth and those websites and you see a huge amount of bullshit comming from all these trols, most of them people with no talent at all, they are not even musicians, as fast as I see someone trying to act like an asshole with me I do not waste my time at all, just push the block user buttom and thats it.   What do you think about the internet in general? a blessing or a curse? Good for people cause nowadays you can get whatever you want by internet, back in the day it was the radio and the cd stores, I miss those days so much, but I also like the way bands are able to put thier music on the Internet using all these tools you have. I have a lot of cds but I also download music all the time from new bands. Stallion is a kickass band and I found them on the net.   What would you personally like to do in your life? Having sex, doing meditation, listening to music really loud and visiting my family on the US at least once a year. I have to work, cause I need to pay my bills and I am IT guy, I studied that cause I needed the money, but I hate computers so much.   Which question would you like to have answered and why? How big my cock is? Kidding I don’t know really   Costa Rica Nice place for visiting and for pleasure, not for living unless you have a lot of money, don’t go to San Jose is a shithole,   horrible place with lots of prostitutes, garbage, poverty ....go the beaches and volcanoes that’s what Costa Rica is a huge and cool jungle with beautifull mountains and nice waterfalls.   Austria My grandpa is german and he was in Austria when he was a little kid he says its pretty much like Germany. I would love to go there one day for sure.   Monumento Nacional de Costa Rica, Nice place to visit   Gallo Pinto I don’t like it and never did when I was a kid, but people love it here.   Beer or Water Both   Saprissa or Deportiva Alajuelense Not a big soccer fan , but Saprissa is the biggest for sure.   Soccer One in a while   Coffe everyday   Movie or Series Movie   Guaro Once in a while, back in the day every day   Family  I am ok with them, I have no kids yet.   Vulkan Arenal Amazing place to Visit and Volcan Poas as well   Green Iguana We have lots here.   your top 5 albums in time   ! Black Sabbath – Heaven and Hell ACDC – Back in Black Queen - Induendo Deep Purple – live in Japan Van Halen - 1984 Would like to add Boston’s self title album and Scorpion’s Blackout   The closing word is yours? Every morning we are born again. What we do today is what matters most   Buddha
